“I was angry at the time because I knew you were holding back on my account,” says Yutaka. The sun is setting, a slow and romantic synth music is playing, the both of them staring into the ocean. The pair, now grown adults, meet up and drive around town together, catching up on lost time and reminiscing on where their lives have diverged. Halfway through the film things get dramatic real quick: after a physical fight over Rikako, the boys fall out, and ultimately never speak again until years later during the highschool reunion that frames the entire film. "I always thought of Yutaka a bit different than my other friends," Taku admits to himself, and when Yutaka falls in love with this new girl, his feelings of jealousy are very clear: "I felt unreasonably irritated to know that Yutaka was interested in Rikako, I thought she'd never see his real value.” All it takes is for Yutaka to call Taku at work asking him to meet him once his shift is over for him to drop everything and run to his friend: "I just wanted to see you" is all he needs to hear.

While Taku appears to keep his distance to Rikako, he values Yutaka over anything else in his animated world. Over the course of the film Yutaka and Taku seem to be more interested in each other than in Ocean Waves's love interest Rikako, who is portrayed as bratty, ambitious and roundly disliked. But watching the film, many contemporary and modern fans began to think that were was more than just friendship between the two boys. As the most modest and least celebrated of the studio’s works, this film explores the love triangle between two teenage boys, best friends Taku and Yutaka, and new girl Rikako.

Watch this fantastical romance anime movie directed by Makoto Shinkai!.As the first film not directed by the studio’s founders, Ocean Waves eschewed the whimsy that was starting to define Ghibli for a more grounded slice of life character drama. Makoto Shinkai’s ability to merge fantasy, a bit of sci-fi, slice of life all into one romantic comedy just amazed me! It’s interestingly how rain was shown as relentless and violent this movie in contrast to the Garden of Words where the rain is depicted as somewhat soothing, sometimes lonel even. Shinkai, the director, also point the effects of climate change and what it could mean for Tokyo. He then meets Hina who has the special ability to manipulate rain and the skies.Īs you watch this movie, you will genuinely start empathizing with the characters in it. He tries to bravely weather the days living alone and finally landing a job writing for a mysterious occult magazine. Only later to struggle and stretch himself thin financially. Hodaka, still in the first year of college, runs away to Tokyo.

A magical love story of a struggling boy and a girl who can control rain and the skies. The next one on my list of best romance anime movies is Weathering With You. Rating: NR | Runtime: 111 Min | Released On: 15th Jan 2020 | Editor’s Rating: 7.3/10 But then aren’t most sappy romantic movies like that? But all in all, The Garden of words was very sweet story and will keep you engaged. Though the ending for me was a bit melodramatic and somewhat predictable. The movie is about 45 minutes long and yet the two characters develop beautifully and as audience we understand the intricacies of each of their lives. This romance anime has my heart – what a sweet story! I have always loved Makoto Shinkai’s work (I mean who doesn’t!). Until one day, he meets a girl who seems to be the only one who believes in him.īut the girl is distant and can’t get close to him until she overcomes her own internal predicaments.ĭirected and written by Makoto Shinkai, this is one of the best romance anime movies I watched a while back.

It really puts Kana Hanazawa in the room with you. It’s a great anime to watch with headphones. #GardenofWords #Kotobanoniwa must have been a hard anime to translate, since it’s built around 1200 year old Japanese poems.
